The Moors were Muslims from Northwest Africa who ruled Spain for nearly 800 years. Under Moorish rule, Europe was introduced to many advances in astronomy, physics, science, medicine, nutrition, architecture, philosophy, and much more. During this time European countries had just 2 universities and a 1% literacy rate compared to the 17 major universities in Moorish Spain where education was universal. Thanks to the Moors, Europe enjoyed its first public baths, libraries, hospitals, and universities, which paved the way for the European Renaissance in the 14th century.
