The story behind the artwork
The word Sahara is derived from the Arabic noun ṣaḥrā meaning “desert”. The Sahara Desert is the largest desert in the world. Located in North Africa, it covers 9.2 square kilometers (8% of earth's land area) which is about the size of China.
Large caravans of up to 12,000 camels have been crossing the Sahara desert for centuries but routes really took off during the rise of Islamic North African States in the 8th century CE. Whether traveling from the Ghanaian empire to Egypt, Morocco to the Songhai kingdom, or Timbuktu to Sudan, caravan routes would shift over the centuries like the sand dunes of the desert as empires rose & fell.
